UNRESTRICTED NARRATIVE: BY KIERA TOLHURST

We decided to film an unrestricted narrative film, to get an idea on how we could use particular techniques in our final product. A unrestricted narrative has more shots, and has more continuity. It usually offers a lot of continuity from from one scene to another and the narrative has less cuts which makes the final product longer (and usually less interesting). For example, in our small exercise, we shot Louis walking down to the vending machine in college. In the restricted edit the product is simple, lacks in continuity, and is shorter than the unrestricted. However, in the unrestricted narrative there is more privileged information for the audience. While Louis begins to walk down to the vending machine, the audience watches the jump cut to downstairs at the machine where Kiera has just tried to buy something and the machine breaks down and is out of service. When Louis finally arrives at the vending machine, he can no longer buy the crisps he wanted. However, the audience already knows this because of the unrestricted edit.

The audience knows how Walter schemes to get Bruce in trouble but in the film Bruce is unaware of Walter's actions. Restricted Narration A restricted narration limits the amount of information that the audience receives. The audience will only receive information through the narration of a single character. This biases the audience towards on...
