Romantic Comedy | Sound

Romantic Comedy – Sound   Non-diegetic soundtracks are the most used and the best way in which romantic comedies can create the feeling of excitement, tension or surprise . It leads and somewhat manipulates the audience to feel a sense of humour and cautious of what is going to happen, this can be contrasted with the use of iconography to build the atmosphere. This can be linked to how the editing is used with the aspect of cinematography to make the audience guess what’s going to happen or how the event will take place . From the sub-genre, the use of upbeat modern or slow 'classical' music makes a large impact on audience’s emotions . An old ‘classical’ song from a record may be played, however the sound will be incorporated to make it sound upsetting , meaningful and heart-breaking . The way the rhythm and pace of the music is carried out can create a sense of joy and upset and reflect the mood of the characters. It can be disordered with added sound to juxtap

PLANNING PT.2 | Beever Media

BEHIND THE SCENES FOOTAGE We have decided, as a group, to produce a 'behind-the-scenes' video to compliment our final product. When we begin filming on Thursday, we are planning to take a smaller, more compact camera which will be effective to film 'vlog' type footage on. The video will be casual and relaxed, but very informative as we film clips from our filming process, our location, characters etc. This will mean we have more information which we can reflect on when we come to the evaluation process nearing the end of the blog. We will all share behind the scenes filming as we will all be featured in the final film at some point (meaning we can't film the behind-the-scenes at the same time.) For example, if Louis is playing a character in the film he cannot film the vlog-type footage however Amber may be available to film this as she may not be included in that particular clip. When film industries do a behind the scenes film they talk about what the film is

Potential Audience

The Potential Audience for our film Romantic Comedies often play off of stereotypes and are mostly centred around love; usually with a female character's quest for love, although sometimes it is a male character who is the protagonist and hopeless romantic. Because of this, the most common audience for remedies are females, furthermore, RomComs often get linked to teen films and chic flicks giving them another common audience of teenagers and young adults. Overall the most common audience group for RomComs is teenage girls. It is believed that RomComs attract female audiences around the age of 12 to 24 however the average audience figures can very when taking into account the family audience they additionally attract. Young females and families are possibly a more popular audience for these films because of the light and 'soppy' branded plots. Most romantic comedies/chic flicks base their film on teenage romance which is the same theme we're using in our film, thus a

After an arduous and labyrinthine journey to find her he discovers she has a boyfriend. Unrestricted and Restricted Narration Research

Narration Narration is the act of telling a story as well as the flow of story information moment by moment over the course of a film. Unrestricted Narration (Omniscient) Unrestricted narration has no restrictions to every aspect of the film. It tells and shows the audience everything whilst the characters in the film remain oblivious to the narration. The viewer knows more than the characters. An example of an unrestricted narrative in a film is His Girl Friday by Howard Hawks (1940). The film shows different characters and scenes. The audience acquires more knowledge about the characters whilst the characters don't know much. The audience knows how Walter schemes to get Bruce in trouble but in the film Bruce is unaware of Walter's actions. Restricted Narration A restricted narration limits the amount of information that the audience receives. The audience will only receive information through the narration of a single character. This biases the audience towards on

Plot and Storylines | Genre Research | Kiera Tolhurst

Romantic Comedies generally consist of two people. The two characters are usually one of each gender although sometimes it has consisted of two or more friends, who experience friendship and love together. Films like this generally consist of humorous moments which are relatable to the audience, also the films themselves always consist of a primary moral which naturally engages the audience. For example in the film 'Bridewars' two friends have become rivals due to the clash of their weddings. This leads to the fight between friendship and love, showing which one holds an importance and questioning which one out of the two, will last in the long run. Conventions of a trailer: Romantic Comedies generally consist of mid shots and establishing shots as there main images. This is due to the conversations between the two main acts and also the detail that is shown within the location, giving off a romantic appeal. The lighting within these scenes are usually high key, this allows the

Planning | Beever Media

Planning Day of Filming We will film on Thursday 30th November. We will meet at the beginning of our media lesson and begin filming. We will film a scene in an empty classroom with a teacher who is free to star in the film. After filming all the classroom scenes we will then film other scenes and shots in college then moving down to scenes in between college and the interchange. We will aim to be filming in the interchange around 12:30-13:00 that way the shots won't be as busy and there will be more space to film and shoot good scenes. We will be getting the train to Penistone which will both get us to Penistone quicker than a bus and will allow us to shoot the train scenes. The train from Barnsley interchange to Penistone railway station leaves after every hour so we aim to get the 14:00 train that way we can we get to Penistone for around 14:20 and will give us hopefully enough time to shoot the scenes at the park before the day gets too late and equally too dark to film goo

Elliptical Editing | Kiera Tolhurst

Elliptical editing is a technique used in film editing that allows an event's duration on-screen to be shorter than its duration in the story. The simplest type of elliptical edit is a cut between two shots , both of which show part of the same event. Editors use elliptical editing to control the pace of the story. A long, tedious event that may take hours in the story may be cut down so that film spectators only need to sit through a few minutes. The film is a series of scenes, each of which only show the most interesting or dramatic events. Almost all narrative films use elliptical editing to keep the running time reasonable. In addition to the basic elliptical cut, there are three common patterns used in elliptical editing: punctuation, empty frame and cutaway.

Setting | Romantic Comedy Research | Kiera Tolhurst

Setting in Romantic Comedy Teen Rom-Coms Because it is important to make a film relatable to audience, for a teenage rom-com the main actors and actresses would be a similar age to the target audience. Typical settings for a teenager to be located would be: 1.        A school. Stereotypical shots in a school environment could include: ·          A school classroom ·          Locker/changing room (in an American rom-com this would be a place for cheerleaders/jockeys/sports people to congregate. ·          The canteen (often where the student sits at lunch/break defines their status - stereotypical examples include groups like nerds, cheerleaders, beauty queens, jockeys, drama students, 'food-obsessed', the quiet ones etc.) ·          The gym or sports fields 2.        A shopping centre or 'mall'. Stereotypical shots in a shopping centre or 'mall' could be included because the target audience of the teenage rom coms are teenagers and youn

Sound/Music in Romantic-Comedy | Amber Smales

Music Music is used in romantic-comedy films to set a particular aura for the film. The music in the film is often released to the public in the form of a soundtrack that appeals to the films target demographic. Often on these sound tracks there are a variety of song genres in order to show the range of feelings that can be felt from watching the film. For example, there may be a song that talks about anger and pain in a relationship to represent a couples obstacle in the film. Music in films are used to add further emotion. The lyrics in these songs also portray meaningful feelings.

Cinematography and Editing in Romantic-Comedies | Amber Smales

Cinematography The most commonly used camera shot in romantic comedy is a two shot. This shot includes two people in the same shot often male and female, it is most frequently used to show a relationship between two people. It is used in romantic comedies to show a relationship develop between two characters and how the characters become comfortable with one another comparing their first scene together, in which they would be tense and awkward, to their last scene together which would be comfortable. Another common shot is Over the Shoulder shot or reaction shot. These two shots show the reactions from people as their significant other is speaking or doing an action. These type of shots help support the story line as well as the development of two characters relationship and how their comfort level with one another begins to increase. Over the shoulder shots in particular have the power to establish a relationship or friendship with the main characters. Furthermore, close ups are also

Settings of a Romantic-Comedy | Amber Smales

Settings The location in which a Romantic-Comedy is filmed often depends who the film is aimed at. If the film is a teen rom-com then the typical locations are: High School University A party These films tend to be filmed in these specific locations as teens can often relate to the characters struggles as well as the types of characters in high schools. As this particular genre of film doesn't stray from reality the locations of teen rom-coms suit the genre. However, Romantic-Comedies that are aimed towards over 18 year old tend to be filmed in cities such as London, New York or Paris. Paris and New York are extremely common locations for rom-com films as they are seen as cities in which love blooms. These cities are extremely well known, fast faced and these locations allow the directors to show the daily life of a character as well as show the audience a more believable perspective of characters. Furthermore, these cities offer many opportunities which allows r

Unrestricted Narrative | Beever Media

UNRESTRICTED NARRATIVE: BY KIERA TOLHURST We decided to film an unrestricted narrative film, to get an idea on how we could use particular techniques in our final product. A unrestricted narrative has more shots, and has more continuity. It usually offers a lot of continuity from from one scene to another and the narrative has less cuts which makes the final product longer (and usually less interesting). For example, in our small exercise, we shot Louis walking down to the vending machine in college. In the restricted edit the product is simple, lacks in continuity, and is shorter than the unrestricted. However, in the unrestricted narrative there is more privileged information for the audience. While Louis begins to walk down to the vending machine, the audience watches the jump cut to downstairs at the machine where Kiera has just tried to buy something and the machine breaks down and is out of service. When Louis finally arrives at the vending machine, he can no longer buy the cri
