Critical Evaluation Question #3 | Amber Smales

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Throughout the process of creating our media product we have undertaken multiple questionnaires amongst our target audience to ensure that once our media product was finished it would satisfy and entertain the audience to its best ability. We did three questionnaires:
  • Initial - This was done after we wrote a storyline for our film.
  • Rough Draft - This was done after we posted a rough draft of our film to YouTube.
  • Final - This was done after we had fully completed the film.
Our film is a Romantic-Comedy that is aimed at teenagers. We chose this audience as we felt our storyline was the most appropriate for this age group.

Filming and Editing the film
Throughout the filming and editing of the film we wanted to ensure we would stick to the genre and storyline of our film as much as possible. This was secure the meaning of the film in order for the audience to understand it. Although, we wanted to stick to our original ideas, somethings occurred meaning that we had to stray from our original idea slightly. Whilst going through this process we sat down as a group and discussed how we could overcome the issues we had stumbled upon as well as adhere to our audiences needs and the conventions of a romantic comedy film. We planned to shoot in new locations to replace the other locations we were unable to film in. After filming scenes in these new locations we found that they suited the film more and our audience would relate further to our film. In our film we have some flashback and dream scenes, we were unsure if these scenes would be apparent to our audience therefore in editing we decided to highlight their meaning to the audience. For example, in a flashback scene - where Luke gives his work to Isaac - we made it slow motion. This gives the audience time to understand what has happened.

Initial Questionnaire
During the start of creating our media product, as a group we decided on a genre that we wanted to build a film around and went away individually to write our own storyline for a film that would suit the Romantic-Comedy genre. After we had all written our own storyline we read each others and took away the best aspects from each plot. Once we had done this we merged all the ideas together to create the storyline for Rendezvous. We wrote the storyline up and decided to ask our target audience what they thought of the plot so far as well as if they throughout it would suit our chosen genre. Although we gave the general public our final storyline we knew that throughout the process of researching, filming and editing our film would change slightly.

In the questionnaire we asked about the person's age and what types of films they watch normally. This gave us an idea of each person and what they favoured in films. The majority of people that answered our questionnaire preferred the genre Romantic-Comedy which meant that our film would attract a large audience. When asking if they would watch our film, 81% of people said they would watch our film just by reading the summary/storyline of our film. One particular thing we were extremely interested in receiving feedback on was what certificate people would give the film. As a group we thought that either a PG or a 12A would be suitable. Five people said that they would a PG certificate would be the most appropriate as our film didn't include anything that wasn't suitable for a younger audience. Other popular options were a U or a 12A. We felt that allowing the audience to decide on the certificate was the best option as they would be the people watching the film. We asked the people what music they thought would fit into our film well as well as suit the genre. The public also agreed that our storyline did match our chosen genre in some way. The majority said that they thought the film was a romantic comedy whilst others said they thought the film was a romance or a comedy. This is sometimes common in genres that are a hybrid of two genres. Many people said that they thought happy, feel good music that is related to love. We took these comments on board and when editing our film we searched for this type of music and succeeded. The music fit extremely well with our film and genre. Also, we asked what kind of props the audience would expect in the film. The majority of people said post it notes. This is because the summary of our film highlighted the importance of this particular prop in our film. Although this didn't give us opinions from the audience it conveys understanding from the audience. However, a prop that was only suggested by two people was roses and chocolates. This enabled us to know that the majority of the target audience were not looking for this particular prop in the film which therefore told us that we didn't need to include this prop in the film. Overall, this questionnaire was essential in our group making future decisions about the film as well as receiving positive feedback on our chosen storyline.

Rough Draft Questionnaire
After the majority of our media product was complete we decided to do another questionnaire to see what the audience thought about our film so far and what they think we could do to improve it to ensure the final draft suits our target audience's tastes. We asked 10 people to complete the questionnaire on our film. When asking the public about what genre they thought our film was the large majority said they thought it was a teen movie. This matches with our target audience. The second most voted genre was a comedy. A large amount of people thought it was a comedy film. Although our film is a hybrid of two genres we wanted to make sure we had a balance between the romantic conventions as well as the comedic conventions. Therefore, we decided to add more comedic conventions by adding music and sound effects in order to balance out the two genres. We also decided to ask what age group they thought our film was aimed towards. This was done to ensure we were sticking to our chosen target audience and not straying away from it too much. The storyline in our film is appropriate for teens and the people that we asked agreed with this. We believe the reason many people thought that the age group the film suited the most was because of the setting of the film. Teenagers can relate to our film due to the setting as all teenagers attend school/college.The other options that people chose were pre-teens and young adults. Due to the certificate of the film, both of these other age groups can watch the film. We believe it would still be quite enjoyable but it is the most entertaining for teenagers as we focused on this particular audience. Furthermore, we also asked the public on a scale of one to ten how much did they enjoy our film thus far. As the video we showed them was only our rough draft there were still many things that we had to clean up and add to the film before it could be viewed for enjoyment/entertainment purposes. However, the large majority of people that answered the questionnaire thought the film was very enjoyable. Over half of the people we asked gave the film a ten out of ten so far. Although we knew what improvements our film needed, receiving this feedback from the audience was a confidence booster.

Final Draft Questionnaire
In order to gather up feedback on the final draft of our film we did another questionnaire. This time it was to see what the audience thought of the final film rather than them telling us what we could improve on. After we had made all the improvements to the film and took on board the advice from people that did the previous questionnaire, we uploaded the film onto YouTube.
In the final questionnaire we asked similar questions to the previous questionnaire. We did this to see if we would get different results from the last questionnaire. This would show how we have improved from our rough draft compared to the final draft of the film. We asked people what genre they thought our film was by watching the final draft of the film. In the rough draft questionnaire there were a wide variety of answers however for this questionnaire there were three answers - romantic comedy, teen movie and comedy. Out of 13 people, 7 people thought the genre of our film was romantic comedy. This told us that we had done quite a good job of representing our chosen genre. We did receive the answer - comedy. This shows that our film may have had some more comedic conventions than romantic conventions. Our main goal for our film was to ensure the characters were relatable, this is because our film was aimed at teens and set in college. The romantic comedy genres main focus is reality. Although our film did challenge some conventions we wanted to adhere to this focus on reality as we felt it was important to entertain the audience. To make sure we kept to this goal we asked the public if they thought our characters were relatable. The majority of people we asked said that they thought our characters were relatable, this meant that we had achieved our goal of keeping the characters relatable.
Just like the rough draft questionnaire we asked the public what age group they thought our film was targeted at. This time we got similar results to the last questionnaire. This shows that we have kept our film appropriate and suitable for our target audience of teenagers. For this question we allowed people to choose more than one answer. Four people we asked said the film was suitable for multiple age groups which agrees with the certificate we gave to our film at the beginning of the project.
Our final question was about what rating people would give our film. For the rough draft questionnaire, the majority of people said our film was a ten out of ten. This time we received a variety of results - 7.5, 8, 9 and 10 out of 10. We believe we got these wide range of results due to the different people we asked. We asked a wide variety of people that had different favourite genres therefore our film didn't suit everyones tastes.

Further Amendments
Although we did think our film was successful but if we could we would make further amendments on it to make it even better. Something that commonly came up in our questionniares was the target audience/the genre. Due to our film been a hybrid of two genres we had to try balance out both romantic and comedic conventions. Throughout the process we found it difficult to balance them out and this was highlghted during the questionnaires. Futhermore, we would improve our camera shots and include more tricky shots. This was because some of our shots could have been improved so that they were higher quality.

Unrestricted and Restricted Narration Research

Narration Narration is the act of telling a story as well as the flow of story information moment by moment over the course of a film. Unrestricted Narration (Omniscient) Unrestricted narration has no restrictions to every aspect of the film. It tells and shows the audience everything whilst the characters in the film remain oblivious to the narration. The viewer knows more than the characters. An example of an unrestricted narrative in a film is His Girl Friday by Howard Hawks (1940). The film shows different characters and scenes. The audience acquires more knowledge about the characters whilst the characters don't know much. The audience knows how Walter schemes to get Bruce in trouble but in the film Bruce is unaware of Walter's actions. Restricted Narration A restricted narration limits the amount of information that the audience receives. The audience will only receive information through the narration of a single character. This biases the audience towards on

Settings of a Romantic-Comedy | Amber Smales

Settings The location in which a Romantic-Comedy is filmed often depends who the film is aimed at. If the film is a teen rom-com then the typical locations are: High School University A party These films tend to be filmed in these specific locations as teens can often relate to the characters struggles as well as the types of characters in high schools. As this particular genre of film doesn't stray from reality the locations of teen rom-coms suit the genre. However, Romantic-Comedies that are aimed towards over 18 year old tend to be filmed in cities such as London, New York or Paris. Paris and New York are extremely common locations for rom-com films as they are seen as cities in which love blooms. These cities are extremely well known, fast faced and these locations allow the directors to show the daily life of a character as well as show the audience a more believable perspective of characters. Furthermore, these cities offer many opportunities which allows r
